adolf_stalin: We're not Cajun, though we're raging!

I need a subscription to Lapham's Quarterly, posthaste. It takes numerous historical texts and uses them to try to bring perspective to a topical contemporary issue. I've been reading the newest (and only the second) issue which deals with the eternally topical subject of money. It takes the writings of those as diverse as Karl Marx and Ayn Rand, includes primary documents from numerous periods throughout history So far here is my favorite part so far: The notion of selling one's kidney is repugnant to so many... I don't know if it should be dismissed entirely though. Personally I wouldn't shed many tears should Croesus die of renal failure. Death must be the great equalizer. As bloomheller22 oft points out, what if the Borgias or de Medicis lived in an era which medical science enabled them to cheat death? On the other hand, we don't live in a world entirely consisting of lollipops and rainbows, and many destitute could live happily on the funds by whoring their organs to the rich. But then again, how soon is it that it becomes commonplace that college students sell their organs to offset their egregious amounts of debt. And for the final counter-counter-counterpoint, is it worse for college students to donate a kidney over the course of an afternoon instead of wasting years of their lives in wage slavery to pay loans? My initial reaction is to say that a person is degraded when required to part with an integral part of themselves in order to obtain meager wealth. Well, anyway, I am currently browsing through my copy of the first volume of Christopher Isherwood's diaries, what impresses is his frankness and his faithfulness in maintaining his diaries. I Must write more about it later. golden_silence is home and wants to go to dinner.

Iron Man was amazing, but my fanboy bias forces me to say that Speed Racer was better. There were a few parts in Iron Man that felt a bit rushed to me, and the fight at the end felt a bit cut short, but on the whole, still good. My only problem with Speed Racer, on the other hand, was the timejumping/flashbacking they did for what felt like too long during the exposition in the beginning. The technique comes up again later, but at those points, it's a good deal briefer and less jarring. Go see both, but you've probably already seen Iron Man so call me if you go see Speed Racer so I can watch it a bajillion times. Thu, May. 8th, 2008, 07:35 pm

14june2003 posting in budget_travel: Orbitz.com?

After a lot of googling and trying different companies for a cheap-ish airfare from Sweden to the US (I'm moving over for a couple of years to study) I found a pretty good price through Orbitz.com. The flights them selves are through SAS and Delta. So figured I'd also google them and check the reviews which after what I've read is very up and down, either all positive or all negative it seems. Does anybody here have any personal experience with Orbitz? Okay but keep an eye on things, run screaming in the other direction, God sent to travelers? :p

I finally got rechargeable batteries for my camera and am able to take pictures again! Let the random posting of photos begin! Things feel much more at ease now that I've finished donating/throwing away a lot of stuff and getting everything else in some kind of order. Merging two lives of your own into a third isn't easy work.
Spending time with my parents is nice, relaxing is nice, having lots of time to think and be productive on my own things is nice. I wish I could see people more. Mon, May. 5th, 2008, 07:36 pm

If the first batch look good, I swear I'm going to make some that say that, and force my friends to wear them in public. Also, Etsy is awesome. You can find anything there, even reasonably priced, customized buttons. For the same price as moo cards, how could I resist?

I finally started knitting a sweater I had planned months ago. I got out the lovely malabrigo lace yarn, and knit a swatch. My gauge was about as close as I was going to get, so I picked what looked like the right size and started knitting. One pattern repeat in, and I realize something... if you look closely at the measurements on the sweater diagram, and the sizes they relate to, it is a very fitted sweater. Snug, in fact. Which would be fine, except in the photos they show an extra-large sweater on an extra-small model, so all along I've been imagining it as a loose slouchy sweater. I'm going to sleep on it, and decide tomorrow if I want to rip out what I've done and make a larger size. At least I have enough yarn.
